In the first Harry Potter, Harry buys ONE
THOUSAND MAGIC HERBS AND FUNGI but near the end it says Harry looked up
dittany in ONE HUNDRED MAGIC HERBS AND FUNGI.
-
In Harry's letter from Hogwarts it says he
could bring a cat, an owl, or a toad, yet Ron still brings his pet rat,
Scabbers.
-
In book 1 Professor Dumbledore says that
Nicolas Flamel destroyed the sorcerer's stone, and has just enough Elixir to
set his affairs straight and then he and his wife would die. But earlier in
the book, it says that the Elixir of Life makes the drinker immortal. So if
Flamel drank it, he never would die.
-
In the first book, Petunia Dursley says that
Lily would "...come home every vacation with her pockets full of frog
spawn, turning teacups into rats...," but according to Magical rules,
this is illegal. If she did this in her Muggle home, she would most
likely be expelled as Harry almost was.
-
In book 1, when Hagrid is taking Harry down
Diagon Alley for the first time, a woman says "17 sickles an ounce
for dragon liver, they're crazy!" but since Hagrid told Harry that
17 sickles makes a galleon, than she was wrong. It would be like saying 100
pennies, instead of 1 dollar.
-
In book one, chapter 7 "The Sorting
Hat" they say after Harry's turn at the sorting hat that there are
three more people to be sorted but there are really four. Here are the four
people.... Dean Thomas, Lisa Turpin, Ron Weasley, and Blaise Zabini. [Note:
This mistake doesn't appear in The Philosopher's Stone however, because the
sentence mentioning Dean Thomas' name isn't there.
-
In Book 1, J.K Rowling wrote that Ron was the
knight in the giant chess set! However, he later said that he
had to 'move ahead one' so the Queen could take him, opening the path for
Ron and Hermione to check-mate the king. If he was a knight, he could only
move 1) ahead one, sideways two, or 2) ahead two, sideways one, But not
ahead one
-
In Philosopher's Stone, Harry's equipment
list says 1 wand twice, once at top, once at bottom.
-
On page 123 of Harry Potter and the
Sorcerer's Stone, Nearly Headless Nick says "I haven't eaten for nearly
four hundred years," Then in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on
page 129 Nick says "Well, this Halloween will be my five hundredth
deathday," There was only one year in between the two. It doesn't work.
-
In book 1, the Dursleys travel in a boat to
the Hut. Hagrid and Harry leave on that boat. How did the Dursleys get back
to land? Sent in by seancutie13
-
From what we know, Harry's birthday is on
July 31, and Nearly Headless Nick's 500th death day was on October 31, 1992.
So if you work it out, Harry's 11th birthday was in 1991. In the first book,
Harry says that his birthday is on a tuesday. However, July 31, 1991 fell on
a wednesday!
-
In the first American book Dean Thomas has a
poster of the West Ham Soccer Team, but in the fourth they call it the West
Ham football team, like it is said in England.
-
Book one, page 15 it says Hagrid is Twice as
tall as a normal man and 5 times as wide, though in book 4 , pg.179 it says
he's twice as tall but only three times as wide. I guess he's been on a
diet.
-
In Book 1, it says that
Professor McGonagall brings out a 4 legged chair with the sorting hat on it.
In book 4, she brings out a 3 legged chair.
Book 2
-
On pg 109, Fred calls
"What's that funny clicking noise?" as he hurtles around the
corner---He is on a quidditch field which is oval shaped. There are no
corners. *NEW*
-
On pg 110, "There were no
girls on the Slytherin Team..." In the movie the Slytherin Keeper was a
girl. (Possible correction: Maybe the girl was a 7th year. But then wouldn't
it just say, there were no girls THIS YEAR?) *NEW*
-
In The Chamber of Secrets, when
Harry, Ron, and Hermione find Mrs. Norris, it says they ran UPSTAIRS
and found her outside the bathroom, Moaning Myrtle's Bathroom. But in The
Deathday Party Hermione says she haunts the bathroom on the FIRST FLOOR.
[Note: Many fans have written to say that in the UK there is a Ground Floor
and up one level would be the First Floor. In the US, the Ground Floor and
the First Floor are the same.]
-
We know that Harry's birthday is
on July 31 because that is the same day as the break in at Gringotts. From
the second book we know Nearly Headless Nick's 500th Death Day Party was on
10/31/1992. Doing the math, we know that Harry's 11th Birthday was
07/31/1991. In The Sorcerer's Stone, Harry says his birthday is on a
Tuesday, the day after Dudley's favorite TV show (The Great Humberto). The
mistake is that July 31, 1991 fell on a Wednesday, not a Tuesday like the
book said!
-
At the end of Book 2, Dumbledore
tells Harry that Lord Voldemort is the last remaining ancestor of Salazar
Slytherin, but actually he is the last remaining DESCENDANT of Slytherin.
-
It's that the basilisk kills
people by looking at it straight in the eye, and both Harry and Myrtle wear
glasses. Colin was petrified by looking at it through glass, so wouldn't
Myrtle just be petrified too? [Possible Correction: Most glasses lenses
these days are plastic. In 1991-2000, my lenses have been plastic.
Maybe the stare can penetrate plastic but not glass.]
-
When Tom Riddle is talking to
Harry, he said that the 2 of them had a lot of things in common, including
the fact that they were both half-bloods. But if James & Lily Potter
were both magical, that would make Harry a pure-blood, not half-blood.
(Note: many readers suggest this is because Lily is Muggle-born)
-
In Book 2, Chapter 9, Harry,
Hermione and Ron discover that Filch is a "squib" after finding
his Kwikspell forms. There is no evidence of any of them telling anyone else
about this revelation, yet two chapters later, Neville says that "they
went for Filch...and everyone knows I'm almost a Squib." How did he
know?
-
In the 2nd book, when Lockhart
deflates Harry's arm, Harry is taken to the Hospital Wing where the
Gryffindor team comes to visit him.Madam Pomfrey shoo's the team away
saying-"Go away!He needs rest-he has THIRTY THREE bones to regrow!"
But only Harry's left arm had been deflated, and an arm does not contain 33
bones!
-
In the second book, the entrance
to the Chamber of Secrets is in a bathroom, and there is a snake engraved in
one of the taps on a sink to show where. Prof. Binns says that the school
was built sometime in the 10th century. Indoor plumbing didn't exist until
the 19th.
-
In book 2 (page 34) it says that
the clock in the Weasley's house has one hand and says things such as
"Time to make tea, Time to feed the chickens, and You're late".
Yet, in book four (page 151) it has nine golden hands and descriptions of
where each member in the family is such as "home, school, work,
traveling, lost, hospital, prison, and mortal peril". Did they get a
new clock or what?
-
In book 2 chapter Four ,Hermione
wrote to Ron and Harry and at the end there were the word "happpening"
too much p's.
-
In book 2 on page 132 Hermione
says about Moaning Myrtle, "She haunts one of the toilets in the girls'
bathroom on the first floor," while in book 4 on page 395 Harry says,
"'I suppose there's always Moaning Myrtle,' he said gloomily, referring
to the ghost who haunted the girls' toilet on the second floor." But
that MIGHT not be a mistake, because remember, things in the castle do move
around a lot.
-
In book 2 "Harry Potter and
the Chamber of Secrets" it says on page 283 the last word on the page
is Professorr, they put one too many "r's" here in the exact
sentence.
-
According to book 2 on page 133
Nearly Headless Nick's cake says, "Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington,
died 31st October, 1492." Since it's his 500th death day party that
would mean that Harry Potter book 2 takes place in the year 1992. However in
book 4 it's mentioned on page 25, "chucked his PlayStation out of the
window." Play Station officially came out in Japan in December 1994,
while at that point in the book it's only August 1994!
-
The 2nd book on page 183 it says
" Get-away-from there-" Perry said. It is supposed to be Percy not
Perry.
Book 3
-
In Book 3 on page 370 in the
middle of the page, Black says Voldemort has been in hiding for 15 years.
Harry is only 13 and was attacked 12 years ago! Why would Voldemort go
into hiding 3 years before this happened when he was supposedly at the
height of his power?
-
In the 3rd book, Ch. 15, The
Quidditch Final, Madam Hooch's whistle rang out as she soared over to
Montague and began shouting at him. A minute later, Katie had put
another penalty past the Slytherin Seeker. Shouldn't it be Keeper? [Possible
Correction: In the UK edition it does say Keeper.]
-
In Book one we are told Marcus
Flint is a burly 6th year. That means he would have been a 7th year in
Book 2. So why is he still a student in Book 3? [Possible Correction:
J.K Rowling was asked about this in a recent online chat. In
what can only be considered an attempt to cover her oversight, J.K
Rowling said "He had to do a year again! "
In book 3 chapter 3, the
driver Stan told Harry the prices to get to London he said it was 11
sickles. But in the book it said Harry shoved GOLD into Stan's hands.
Sickles are silver coins, not gold made coins. [Note: this mistake is only
in the American edition.]
-
Apparently wizard months are
different from ours. August is only three weeks long! In 'Prisoner of
Azkaban', Aunt Marge shows up on Harry's birthday -July 31. A
week later, he blows her up and flees. Then he spends two weeks at the
Leaky Cauldron and goes up the King's Cross on September 1. That's no more
than three weeks! So what's up?
-
In the 1st book, Harry is taking
his Nimbus 2000 to the broom shed when he sees Snape going into the
forest, but in the 3rd book, it says that Harry keeps dashing up to his dorm
to check that his Firebolt is still there. If there is a broom shed,
shouldn't it be there, or was the broom shed just added? [Possible
Correction: The reason why Harry doesn't use the shed is because he doesn't
want his precious Firebolt damaged in a broom shed.]
-
In the 3rd book on page 285
(American) it says "Snap picked up the Zonko's bag" but it's
suppose to be Snape.
-
In Book 3, before Harry uses the
Time Turner to save Buckbeak and Sirius, Harry saw himself performing the
Patronus (whilst with everyone) he performed when he used the Time Turner,
which was in the future. Which leads to another point: Harry saw himself.
Hermione said he couldn't do that. Harry broke a wizarding law, so he should
be expelled from Hogwarts, after getting a warning in Book 2. .
-
In book 3, Dumbledore says that
he gave evidence at Sirius Black's trial, but Sirius tells Harry that he
didn't get a trial!
-
At the end of Book 3, Hermione
dropped Muggle Studies, and said that she had the same amount of subjects as
Ron and Harry. But Harry and Ron take Care of Magical Creatures and
Divinition. Hermione takes Care of Magical Creatures, Ancient Runes AND
Arithmancy. 2 doesn't equal 3.
Book 4
-
Mr. Weasley says that Port
keys are "objects used to transport wizards from one spot to another at
a prearranged time." But the Triwizard Cup (which was supposed to
be a portkey) transported people whenever it was touched, there was no
"prearranged time."
-
When Harry is in the Prefect
bathroom, he makes a comment about breathing, and Moaning Myrtle is upset
that he talked about breathing in front of her, since she hasn't done so for
years. Then it says that she "buried her head in her handkerchief and
SNIFFED loudly." Isn't sniffing a form of breathing?
-
In Book 4 (British version), pg.
344 Hermione is saying something about a girl named Eloise Midgeon. Then on
pg. 348 it talks about her again, and it spells her name Eloise Midgen (no
"O" between "E" and "N"). Did J.K. write this
by accident or was it a publishing mistake?
-
When the 'echoes' of the people
Voldemort has killed come out of his wand, Cedric Diggory comes out also.
But in the chapter before that, Pettigrew kills Cedric, because
Voldemort commands him to 'kill the spare'.
-
When Voldemort's wand releases
the spells he has done in reverse order, Harry's father, James, comes out
before Harry's mom, Lily, meaning he was killed after Lilly. But doesn't
this contradict Book 3 when Harry hears his father yelling, "I'll hold
him off" and the fact that Lily protected Harry until she was killed
and then Voldemort went right on to Harry -- and being immediately defeated?
-
During the year at Hogwarts,
they were still giving out and tallying away points for the Inter-House Cup
but they never gave a cup! What was the point of the points?
-
In Book 2 [US] the password to
Dumbledore's office was "Lemon Drop" ("Sherbet Lemon" in
the UK edition). In Book 4 they say it is "Sherbet Lemon" in
the American edition. Apparently "Sherbet Lemon" was not
translated from the UK edition in Book 4 as it was in Books 1 and 2.
-
In Book 2 it was stated that Tom
Riddle was poor BUT in book 4, chapter 1, it said that The Riddle Family was
a rich and high class family. [Correction: Voldemort and his dad have the
same name, Tom Riddle. Once his dad found out that his wife was a
witch he fled to his parents house. They were very rich. Then
years later Tom Riddle Jr. comes along and kills them all].
-
It clearly states in the first
chapter of Book 4 that Frank Bryce was " very deaf," yet he hears
that entire conversation.
-
In book 4 it says that they
banned flying carpets because they were a Muggle thing, but what are brooms?
Muggle things! BUT! How many brooms do you see in your house with a serial
number and edition carved in. Also, the broom sticks are tied up tight in a
wizard broom.....whats the point of tied sticks in a muggle one!? [Thanks to
Daniel]
-
At the end of Book 3 Ron
received an owl, for keeps as a present, from Sirius Black and Harry and
Hermione were both there to see it. Then near the beginning of the 4th book
Ron sends Harry a letter with the bird and Harry seems as if he had
never seen it before!
-
In Book 4 [UK version page 503]
Fudge, Dumbledore, and Moody are talking about Crouch. But instead of
Fudge yelling to Dumbledore, it says: "said Crouch angrily".
He wasn't even in the room... they were talking about him but not with
him.
-
Mad-Eye Moody says that Lily and
James Potter were killed by "Avada Kedavra". When (others) were
killed using that curse they fell to the ground and were just dead. In
Book 1 [page 53 US version] Aunt Petunia remarks that her sister got herself
"BLOWN UP" and Hagrid said in the same chapter that the house was
in ruins. If Lily was killed with Avada Kedavra she would have just
died. Maybe J.K forgot how she described the house in Book One? [Possible
Correction: When the Avada Kedavra curse rebounded on Voldemort maybe it had
a side effect and blew up the house. And about what Aunt Pentunia said,
she's a muggle, she might not know the exact details of how her sister died]
-
When Harry received his letters
from Hogwarts in Book 1 they poured out of the fireplace. But in Book 4
Mr. Weasley was unable to get through it as it was an electric fireplace.
-
In chapter two, Harry wakes up
with his scar burning in the early morning. That same day he receives
a letter from Ron that says they will pick him up on Sunday at 5 p.m.
He replies to Ron, saying "see you tomorrow", which means
his scar hurt on a Saturday. But he tells Ron and Hermione at the
Burrow that he woke up on Sunday morning with his scar burning, when it was
actually Saturday morning!
-
In book 1, the fireplace is in
the kitchen when the envelopes pour out of it, but in book 4, the fire place
was in the living room.
-
In Book 4, Moody/Crouch tells
Harry & class that he (Harry) is the only known person to survive Avada
Kedavra. But, if the curse rebounded onto Voldemort, he survived it too,
right?
-
Well, in Goblet of Fire...Isn't
that qulified wizard students who'd want to enter the
tournament--"...must write their name and the school clearly..."
said Dumbledore (HP4:pg.225) in a piece of parchment and place it in the
goblet? Well then Moody/Crouch revealed to Harry in the end that He put
Harry's name under a different school so that he could enter the tournament
(HP4:pg.676). Don't you think Dumbledore who'd noticed it when he called out
Harry to be the fourth champion (since, you know, he would've seen the
school Moody/Crouch had placed Harry under--and save some trouble)?
-
I found was on pg. 556
(American) in the Goblet of Fire, where Mr. Crouch is talking to a tree. He
states that he was proud of his son, who had recently gained 12 O.W.L.s. He
then mentions a memo from the Andorran minister of magic. While his son was
alive, however, he was not with the Department of International Magical
Cooperation but with the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. So why would
he be receiving memos from an Andorran minister?
-
In the fourth book (American) on
the chapter "Aboard the Hogwarts Express", there is a picture
above the heading of Harry's luggage. It shows Hedwig on top of the luggage,
but isn't Hedwig supposed to be out delivering a letter to Sirius?
-
In Defense against Darks arts,
Harry says he had the Imperious curse on him four times, until he could
throw it off completely. But then later, when Voldemort puts it on him, the
book says, " For the Third time in his life, that feeling of unconcern
drifted over him" But it wasn't the 3rd time, it was the 5th.
-
In Harry Potter book 4 There
is a reference of Dudley throwing a Playstation through the green house
roof, well book four would of taken place in 1994(-95) where in the second
book as we already knows revealed to have taken place in 92 at Sir Nicholas'
500th death day party. Well anyways, Playstations didn't come out until '97,
and last time I checked Dudley doesn't have the power to read the future.
Thanks to Gabe.
Book 5
- I have a mistake for the 5th Harry Potter
book. Ok, it says that Harry is suddenly able to see the thestrals since he
saw Cedric die. Didn't Harry see his Mother die when Voldemort killed her?
- When the future DA is meeting in the Hogs
Head, both of the Creevey brothers are there - now in books 3 & 4 they
say that only 3rd years and older can go to Hogsmeade .. so what is Dennis
Creevey doing there ? He's only a second year in the fifth book!!
