What
is the DA?
In their fifth
year, Harry, Ron and Hermione were taught Defense Against the Dark
Arts by Professor Dolores Jane Umbridge, a witch from the Ministry
of Magic, sent to Hogwarts by Fudge, when Dumbledore was unable to
find a new DADA teacher. She was basically here as the spy for the
Minister.
The Ministry did
not believe that Voldemort has risen again and they would not let
the students practice any Defensive spells. It was then that Hermione had
the idea of learning Defense by themselves, under the guidance of
Harry. She called all the people she thought would be willing to
study, to Hog's Head.
After this they
met once every week in the Room of Requirements, and held their
Training sessions there. After suggestions like Anti-Umbridge League
from Angelina Johnson and Ministry of Magic are Morons Group by Fred
Weasely (Hmmm... sounds good), Cho Chang
suggested the name Defense Association which was later changed to
Dumbledore's Army, the thing Fudge feared the most, the short form
DA (Ginny Weasely's suggestion).
In the meetings
they learnt loads of charms, spells, jinxes like Expelliarmus,
Impediment Jinx, Reductor Curse, Patronus Charm and more importantly
they learnt how to bear these things when someone aimed them at you.
Hermione had also invented a way to communicate the time of the
meetings to other by using a Protean Charm on a Galleon, which had
the time of the next meeting around it. This became warm whenever
the time of the meetings changed.
The DA not only had
made its accomplishments in the school, but some of the DA members
like Neville, Ginny and Luna Lovegood accompanied Harry, Ron and
Hermione to the Department of Mysteries and fought bravely against
the Death Eaters, facing them with equal enthusiasm and
fought better than what was their best. The year was a great one for all of
them because though they had other worries and things, but they
still had the satisfaction of doing something against the "evil
Umbridge woman", who had been trying with all her might to stop
any Defense Against the Dark Arts practice.
So, if you are brave at
heart and don't fear either Umbridge or the Death Eaters, come join us
in our revolt against Umbridge! You get loads of stuffs like a cool
badge, and a galleon too!
