Hermione's
Letter
“Hermione,
Come down and help with lunch.” Mrs. Granger called
up the stairs.
Hermione closed the book she was reading with a sigh.
She thought the book was very interesting. ‘Rise and
Fall of Native American Culture’. American History
was so different from England’s. Hermione thumped
down stairs to help her mom.
“Why don’t you set the table while I finish the
salad.” Her mom, Gail, said as she smiled at
Hermione. “Your dad should be home any minute.”
Hermione quickly set the table realizing with a start
that she didn’t have to stretch on her toes to get
the glasses down from the cupboard.
Hermione was an only child; both of her parents are
dentists and run their own office. Hermione doesn’t
get to spend much time with ser parents since
they’re usually working. Today was different, it was
Hermione’s 11th Birthday and her mom & dad
decided to close the office for the afternoon to take
Hermione shopping after lunch.
“Happy birthday, Pumpkin. “ Mr. Granger came
through the dining room to hug his daughter.
“Thanks Dad!” Hermione gave her dad a huge smile,
trying to look at the present he had hidden behind his
back.
“Here you are, Pumpkin, you can open it before
lunch.” Richard handed his daughter the present.
Gail came in from the kitchen with the salad just as
Hermione ripped open her birthday present. Inside was
a intricately carved mahogany chest. The carvings were
of a unicorn and a girl patting it’s neck and a
wreath of flowers around the boarder. Inside the small
chest was a brush and comb set. Both out of carved
wood with inlaid silver flowers.
“Oh.
This is sooo gorgeous.” Hermione
said. “Thanks, so much!” Giving her dad another
big hug.
She set the box beside her plate as her mom finished
brining out the rest of the meal.
At they sat down to eat they heard a scratching sound
at one of the windows in the kitchen. Mrs. Granger got
up and went into the kitchen to see what was making
that sound.
Hermione took one look at her father before she bolted
to the kitchen, where she could here her mom
shrieking. As she went through the door she had to
duck from the large white owl swooping around the
kitchen. As the owl spotted Hermione, he settled to
the counter top offering her the letter he held in his
beak.
Hermione looked at her dad and shrugged. She slowly
extended her hand towards the owl. She took the
envelope from the owl, who gave an encouraging hoot.
Hermione turned over the envelope, it had her name and
address in glittering green writing. Hermione broke
the large purple seal and pulled out the letter. Out
load she read,
“Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry
Headmaster :Albus Dumbledore
(Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorc., Chf.
Worlock, Supreme
Magwump, International Confed. Of Wizards)
Dear Ms. Granger,
We are please to inform you that you have been
accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and
Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list off all
necessary books and equipment. Term begins on Sept. 1.
We await your owl no later than July 31st.
Yours Sincerely,
Minerva McGonagall
Deputy Headmistress"
Hermione finished reading turned to her mom and dad
with wide eyes. Her parents just stared back at their
daughter.
Comprehension
dawned on Hermione’s
face. “That would explain so much.” She exclaimed.
“Beth’s purple hair last term when she made fun of
mine. And when Kelly’s front teeth had turned all
black for two days when she called me a wood chuck.”
Hermione went on for several minutes before she
realized what all this was really about.
“That means that I am a witch. A 100% Magical
Witch!” Hermione danced around the kitchen.
Hermione’s mom gave her daughter a hug and a kiss on
the cheek, “As unbelievable as it seems it does
explain all those unusual things that have happened to
you. What do you say Richard,” as Gail turned toward
Richard, “should we let Hermione go to this
Hogwarts? Maybe she’ll learn how to control these
strange happenings.”
“You know Gail I would usually like to think this
over a while and find out all I could about this
school. However since we don’t have an owl to send
back a replay, I think we’ll have to decide rather
quickly. Hermione do you want to go to Hogwarts?”
“Oh
Yes!” Hermione
breathed, daring to hope that her parents would
actually let her go to this unknown school.
“Gail?”
Gail Nodded.
“Alright, lets get a message ready to give to the
owl to take back with him.” Richard opened a drawer
and pulled out a pen & paper. “What else is
included with your letter, Pumpkin?”
“Let’s see,” Hermione opened the remaining
papers. “Here’s a list of the supplies I will
need. And here are the directions to a place called
Diagon Alley, London. Have you ever heard of such a
place?”
Both here parents shook their heads no. Hermione
looked at the last page which was another short letter
“There’s
more.” Hermione
read the second note to her parents. “ Due to the
fact both your parents are muggles (non-magic people)
the following is to further aid you in finding Diagon
Alley. Please see Tom, the bartender at The Leaky
Cauldron. He will be able to assist you in finding the
way into Diagon Alley. Once there go to the end of the
street to Gringotts Bank where you will be able to
exchange muggle money into wizard coin. You will also
be able to purchase your ticket to Hogwarts at one of
the travel shops.
Yours Sincerely, Minerva McGonagall Deputy
Headmistress.”
Hermione’s dad finished the acceptance letter and
folded it into an envelope. On the front he wrote
Minerva McGonagall , Deputy Headmistress, Hogwarts. He
then gave the envelope to Hermione to give to the
snowy owl. Hermione presented the letter to the owl
who took it in his beak and flew out the window.
“Come lets finish lunch.” Gail led them back to
the dining room.
Once
they were done cleaning up after lunch, Hermione
asked, “Would it be alright if we find Diagon Alley
today when you take me shopping? I really would like
to get all my books as early as possible.” She
lowered her voice as she confided in her mom. “I
know this is strange and more than a little weird, but
I don’t know anything about being a witch. I don’t
want to be the one people laugh at anymore. If we can
get my things today at Diagon Alley then at least I
can be a bit more prepared. I have almost two months
to learn as much as I can, before I start school”
“Yes dear, of course we can go today.” Gail smiled
proudly at her daughter. “I’ll just go tell your
father, while you finish putting away the dishes.
